Draper, Inc. has an excellent opportunity for a degreed Product Design Engineer. The position will design and develop new products and product improvements, conduct analytical studies on engineering proposals to develop design specs for products, provide engineering support for all aspects of assigned product line to ensure functionality, quality, cost, and schedule.

Responsibilities include:

  • Working closely Product Managers to develop specifications and create design concepts and solutions
  • Developing concepts, design drawings, prototypes, material specifications and testing methods
  • Ensuring products meet the marketing feature requirements and design goals
  • Maintaining accountability for product family designs from cradle to grave and achieves resolution of design issues
  • Working closely with Product Configuration Specialists to provide accurate bills of material and successfully launch standard products in a mass customization platform
  • Supporting manufacturing up to and during product production
  • Reviewing existing products and recommends design improvements to achieve, including but not limited to, simplified designs and reduced manufacturing lead times and cost, as well as to meet customer requirements
  • Strong analytical/problem solving skills and ability to use statistical tools and techniques
  • Understanding of intellectual property matters and procedures
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Requirements include:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or BSMET from an accredited university
  • 5-10 years of experience in product development is required for this position
  • Must have experience designing injection molded plastics components and assemblies, as well as design experience with sheet metal, aluminum extrusions, machining, castings, weldments, etc.
  • Demonstrated use of AutoDesk Inventor or other 3D CAD software for complex mechanical designs. Experience with AutoDesk Vault is a plus
  • This position requires considerable interaction and proactive involvement with all levels in other departments. Requires self-directedness, able and willing to prioritize and take initiative
  • Experience in electro-mechanical assemblies is a plus.
